Neuralgia

Neuralgia is a term used for pain caused by a damaged or irritated nerve. This pain is described by most people as burning and dull. Typically, the pain is more pronounced at night.

There are many different types of neuralgia that can be caused by different causes, such as:

  • Trigeminal Neuralgia: A pain condition caused by irritation or damage to the trigeminal nerve.

  • Glossopharyngeal neuralgia: A pain disorder caused by irritation or damage to the glossopharyngeal nerve.

  • Herpes zoster neuralgia (also known as postherpetic neuralgia): A pain condition that can occur after contracting shingles.

  • Neuralgia with mechanical damage to nerves throughout the body

Treatment for neuralgia depends on the cause, but pain relief is often the primary goal.

For example, pain medication, antidepressant medication, antiepileptics, operative nerve treatments, acupuncture and psychotherapy can be helpful.

It is important to see a doctor early to receive proper diagnosis and treatment.
